“So once I started printing things, my sci-fi loving wife’s eyes sparkled (more than normal) and she had a ‘we can replace every plastic piece in the house with something custom’ moment. What I love about her is this was immediately followed by ‘you could drive someone mad with real subtle changes, too.’”

Of all of the potentially mischievous uses of a 3D printer, this is the most creative I’ve heard to date. This could even be automated to a certain extent. It would be fun to shrink someone’s office supplies. Heck, it’s not inconceivable that someone could scan in someone else’s objects, then scan the objects they will morph into, create a stream of intermediary 3D models, and slowly replace someone’s beloved coffee mug with a sculpture of a jackalope.

I remember a comment a while back from someone who was pretty adamant that sharing everything would pretty much immediately ruin their business, and I have no reason to doubt that, in that case, this is a reasoned judgement. But that doesn’t mean I don’t believe in companies sharing everything, opening their doors, and in general collaborating with their customers, in the open.

But a lot of your customers aren’t used to this, and unless you’re directly marketing to consumers, nearly all of them will be locked in to the trade secrets, patents and trademarks model– and from experience, I can tell you that at least some of them will treat open source almost like hazardous waste.

Winning with Sharing in these cases is a heck of a lot more challenging than if you’re working in a field where what you sell goes directly to individuals, because where individuals are eager to form brand loyalty to the more open provider, institutions in this climate are broadly sharing-averse. But while a radical leap into deep sharing may very well be as dangerous as starting a new company altogether, there are things that aren’t, such as:

Offering clients a discount if at some specified time down the road, their (anonymized) commissioned engineering work enters your open tech wiki

Pushing back on a few Non-Disclosure Agreement terms

Share on the back end: general technical information, process blogging, specs of dead products

Publish white papers or even academic ones (full disclosure, I’m in academia!)

Of course none of this will fix the problem that these days bringing a product to market can require a war chest of patents, or that in a lot of sectors open source is a four-letter word, but the steps above are in the right direction, and to me at least they look like good business choices too.

R2D2 volvió a funcionar perfectamente!!

Este ha sido un ejemplo de Auto-reparación. R2 ha impreso su propio recambio. Alucinante!

As you can see, this is a print of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. It has a few problems. First, the pen was non-ideal. This will take some experimentation. Second, the image, as anyone can tell you, is mirrored. Third, the image was supposed to be much larger – almost as wide as the entire A4 page I’ve scanned in above. I fiddled with some settings last night, but didn’t accomplish much. I’ll try again tonight.

However! I’m really very encouraged! It actually drew something that roughly corresponds to the thing I’ve asked it to draw! I’m looking forward to playing with the settings. The robot is fairly quiet – it’s propped against a wall about seven feet from where I’m sitting and the sound of operation is barely noticeable above the television.

Doesn’t everybody love free stuff?!

Thanks to a posting on the RepRap forums http://forums.reprap.org/read.php?1,116843 , I was alerted to a limited-time offer to get some really top-class 3D modelling software for free.

Specifically, for a “limited period” (no, I’m not sure how long!), DAZ is making the Pro versions of DAZ Studio 4 , Bryce 7 and Hexagon 2.5 available as free downloads, which can be fully registered. http://www.daz3d.com

I’m not sure what the rationale behind this is, but I suspect DAZ is shifting their business model from selling software to selling content, and they need millions of users out there to sell their content to. (I expect to get lots of e-mail offers to buy and download model files, but I can live with that!)

In my previous tinkering with 3D software, I have come across Daz Studio (very similar in functionality to Autodesk 3DS Max etc), and Bryce (fantastic for creating "virtual landscapes"), but this is the first time I've seen the Pro versions offered for free. I’m not sure how relevant these packages are to RepRap (maybe you could print landscapes for your model railway layout?), but they're pretty interesting packages for anyone who likes playing with 3D software. (E.g. you could use DAZ Studio to create photo-real renderings of your digital creations before you print them.)

I haven't seen Hexagon before, but it looks like it might be a good tool for making "organic" models (such as "character figurines", animals, replicas of Henry Moore sculptures, etc). Most traditional CAD packages (like OpenSCAD, Inventor, Alibre, etc) are good at making mechanical components from geometric primitives (cubes, cylinders, etc), but are rather harder to use for "free-form" modelling (like sculpting with “digital clay”).

I suggest any one who is interested should download and register them all now (while the offer is still available) and give them a try. What have you got to lose (apart from possibly getting a heap of marketing material from Daz in your Inbox)?

Variable Density Hilbert Curve

First few images from a quick proof of concept, but first the background... I've been pondering infill algorithms for a while and wondering how best to account for variable internal density, whilst still retaining high print speed. Whilst looking at space filling curves yesterday, it occurred to me that it should be possible to vary the apparent density of the curve simply by modifying the recursion depth inline with a reference model or image.

To quickly judge the effectiveness of this approach, I've put together a very quick applet that varies the recursion density of the Hilbert Curve according to the average grayscale levels of a reference image. Below are a couple of samples to illustrate the effect.

1) Rubix Cube - Hilbert Curve between 4 and 8 levels of recursion:

2) Kitten - Hilbert Curve between 6 and 9 levels of recursion

3) Kitten - Hilbert Curve between 5 and 9 levels of recursion

The two kitten images show the effect of modifying a "contrast" operator, that controls the level of recursion associated with each grayscale range.

Next step is to see what happens if this approach is combined with a density map generated along the lines of this post: http://axuv.blogspot.com/2012/01/adaptive-infill.html. Off to Amsterdam for a few days, so this will have to wait for next weekend...

Saludos!

We thank all of you that have been checking in with our team lately to explore ideas and designs. We are amazed at your continued efforts in the 3DP arena. Please keep it up and please continue to share your ideas with the world.

Since approximately, October 17, 2011, we’ve been a little bit more guarded about what is going on in our lab and perhaps a little less helpful or open to some of you. We’re sorry. Our University has decided, with no faculty involvement to change our consulting/engagement forms.

If interested, please see:

http://www.washington.edu/admin/acadpers/forms/approval_compensation.docx

Along with this form, an email stating:

“The modifications reflect two areas of improvement. First, it has become

increasingly apparent academic staff are not aware that engaging in outside

work with any potential economic benefit triggers the requirement for

approval through submission of this form. This includes situations where the

economic benefit could arise due to an equity interest in the company for which

the work is being performed, or due to potential benefit through intellectual

property interests. It also includes any work where there is an entitlement to

compensation, even if that compensation is waived or donated. The form has

been reworded to clarify the policy requirement and provide guidance. Please
note that it is of benefit to the staff member to complete the outside work review
process, as it provides University approval for the activities, including de minimus
use of state facilities for outside work that might otherwise trigger a violation of
the Washington State Ethics in Public Service Act. “

This “minor” change in our consulting form has produced a claim of total University ownership of any and all intellectual property (IP) associated activity paid or unpaid (in which one should or might have gotten paid). Thus, if we help you, or offer advice (free consulting), we put you at risk of losing any and all of your IP in the transaction.

We have been sending the following form email to requests that require more than a casual response from us.

“Dear #, Thank you for your interest in ###. At this point, we are
very sorry to say that due to recent changes in University IP status,
we can’t be of much help. Our current situation on IP would likely
give the Univ. any and all IP as a result of such efforts or
interactions. We are currently in a very strange situation as we
can’t even consult without those same IP issues (or even volunteer).

We have several faculty groups attempting to resolve the situation
in a positive manner but it will take some time.

Currently, the only way to do ### with us at the Univ. is to engage in a
research contract with the University. The costs would run between
$80K and $110K minimum (which would provide support for one
graduate student, some of our time and lab/machine time).

Perhaps, you might try ### at ### or ### at ###. “

Several faculty groups on our campus our attempting to work towards a positive out coming of this situation.

Please be patient of these issues and continue to support us in our quest of Open3DP.

Following my previous blog post I couldn't miss posting about this product model by one of my students.

As you can see from the photos this student has tackled a project to design an improved pencil sharpener.

This is intended to be a non functional model exploring the ergonomics of the design and some aspects of the functionality such as the hinged waste bin and aesthetics.

A very promising project... I will hopefully post some more as it develops, so keep checking back here!
